Shannons Nationals 2013 Round 7- Phillip Island September 21-22

MEDIA RELEASE

The Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals returns to Phillip Island for its second exciting visit in 2013, being Round 7 of this year’s nationwide series.

The bonus is that other than the Radical Sports Cars, all the categories are different to those seen back in May.

The Radical Sports cars return with two classes as they did earlier in the year with both the 4 Cylinder 1500cc SR3RS specification and new for 2013 2700cc V8 engined SR8RX. Expect more lap record action and close fast laps from the SR8s, in an action packed 50 minute mini-enduro each day.

Back in the cool May conditions former Gold Star Champion, Englishman James Winslow took to the Islands grippie new surface with a vengeance setting a blistering 1minute.25.9294second Lap Record in his SR8RX, a time merely 1.7079 seconds outside the circuits outright Record of 1.24.2215 set by Simon Wills 13 years ago.

The increasingly popular V8 Touring Car Category will again provide a top class field with many of these former V8 Supercars returning to their heritage colours in deference to their previous life in the nation’s top category.

Local favourite Gippslander, V8 veteran Terry Wyhoon will be anxious to show his home crowd why he was recently awarded PIARC’s Competitor of the Year Award for 2012, (the first two time winner) by winning at his home track and improving his second place standing in the 2013 series penultimate round. The 5 Litre V8s will compete over two 8 lap heats and a 12 lap final during the weekend.

More thundering V8 engines will roar in Round 4 of the Australian Sports Sedan Series with Ricciardello, Hossack, Tamasi and co all itching to claw back points from series leader, Bailey in the categories 3 9 Lap races.

The Porsche GT3 Challenge Cup returns for its series final with young first year star Richard Muscat having an unassailable lead, but keen to go record hunting to celebrate his series win and show Porsche veterans such as Peter Fitzgerald how to do it at the Island during their 3 race appearances.

The Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship enters its penultimate round with 2007 CAMS Gold Star Champion and PIARC member Tim Macrow having a slender points lead he will be keen to grow whilst having a crack at Leanne Tander’s 5 year old Lap Record. The 32 year old Driver Coach will be keen show he still has lost none of his star qualities despite 6 years since his last Championship.

The Australian Superkart Championship Round 2 will have its usual big field of pocket rockets lead by Lap Record Holder and points leader Russell Jamieson chased by Gary Pegoraro and Jason Smith, second and third placed respectively

Rounding out the program will be Saloon Cars with 2012 Series winner and points leader Simon Tabinor looking to win this penultimate round and the 2013 series before moving on to V8 Touring Cars, but second on points Travis Sharpe and third placed Harley Phelan certainly will make it hard for him. The wild card could well be local driver and 2008 PIARC Competitor of the Year Andrew Nowland who always features well at his seaside home circuit

Witness records tumble throughout the weekend adding to the 15 new lap records so far this year thanks to the Circuit resurfacing conducted late in 2012.

Qualifying and racing from 9.00am each day.

Weekend Pass only $35-00, accompanied, kids under 16 free of charge.

Daily admission also available.
