The third round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the German circuit, Sachsenring had Aussie young gun Olly Simpson back on his bike and ready for a competitive weekend of racing. He had recovered well from dislocating his shoulder in the previous round at Assen only two weeks earlier.
Olly’s weekend started with free practice 1. He was able to get a feel for the track and the bike again, finishing the session in 7th position. In the lead up to free practice 2 Olly was able to adjust some settings on the bike but struggled with confidence after his crash in Assen, ending the session in 11th place. Olly had to find something for qualifying and he set some good pace and qualified 9th, only two tenths of a second off third place.
Olly’s plan for Race 1 was to make a good start and get away from the front of the group. Unfortunately his quickshifter broke at the start of the race, which changed the gears without having to let off the accelerator, forcing him to lose a lot of time. Olly was still able to finish the race in a respective 8th position.
With the quickshifter fixed Olly was ready for Race 2. He made an awesome start, getting up to second position as he came out of the first corner. He managed to maintain third position for the first lap, then as someone managed to pass him the race leaders were able to lengthen the gap. Olly was able to get back into third position, creating a 1 second gap with 11 laps to goof the 19 lap race. Coming around turn 2 the bike hit neutral and he lost a lot of time, the remaining laps had him in a battle for 3rd position.
On the last lap Olly was still battling hard and it came down to the penultimate corner where he over taken, he got into 2nd position as one of the leaders had crashed in the last corner. However he was a bit aggressive and ran a bit wide and finished the race in a decent 5th position. Although Olly would have liked a better race weekend he was still happy with the points he was able to gain.
Olly is ready to fight in Brno in 4 weeks’ time for the 4th round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and with his confidence full and ready for good strong results.
