Difficult Weekend for Olly at Brno

The fifth round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Brno circuit in the Czech Republic proved to be a testing weekend for young Olly Simpson right from the get-go on Friday.

Olly had two free practice sessions and one qualifying session on the Friday with the first free practice being used for running in the bike as it had new parts in the engine. During the second free practice session you could see Olly getting used to the track whilst trying to get the best possible set up for the bike.

“I was having trouble gelling to the Brno circuit. I finished the session in 13th then in qualifying I tried another setting on the bike to see if it would improve and it seemed to help. I certainly achieved a faster time and ended in ninth, which wasn’t where I wanted to be and I still wasn’t happy with the bike.”

said Olly

Race one was different as the start was delayed three times due to light showers and unfortunately the race was shortened from 14 to 9 laps. It was a level playing field however with all riders having to start with wet tyres on a dry track.

“I was a bit too cautious at the start as I didn’t want to crash like I did at Sachsenring in Germany on the opening laps. Try as hard as I could I couldn’t catch the lead group, but on a positive note my times during the race were the same as the leaders but I only finished ninth.”

lamented Olly

Olly still wasn’t happy with the set-up of the bike from race one so for race two they tried another different setting and it looked like they had made the right decision as Olly got up to fourth, but it wasn’t to last.

“After one lap I knew I went the wrong way with the setup on the bike as it wouldn’t hold a tight line and would run wide around the corners. I finished 11th which I wasn’t happy about again. Even though the results were not what we were looking for I have the support of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and I have to take a positive out of this meeting as I have learnt a lot, which I can take to Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Silverstone, England next week.”

concluded Olly.
