Having the support of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit means Olly Simpson can plan his racing program in detail and take advantage of opportunities that arise and this is what happened when he was about to head off for his summer break. The decision was made to enter the British Superbike Championship round 5 at Brands Hatch last weekend and it proved to be a very wise decision.
”I had a flight leaving from Brands Hatch to come back to Australia for the summer break. So we thought it would be a great opportunity to ride and get some extra practice for the next round of Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup,”
said Olly
Unfortunately for Olly the Friday practice sessions were marred by some technical issues which meant he couldn’t produce any flying laps. However these issues were sorted out before Saturday’s qualifying which saw the track soaked due to a huge thunderstorm on Friday night.
“In the first practice session I took my time to get a feel for the bike and the track. I managed to get into a good rhythm and was fifth fastest. In qualifying two the track was dry and we had a very good set up on the bike, at the end of this session I was second fastest and .634 behind first place meaning I would start second on the grid,”
commented Olly.
Olly set the quickest time in the Sunday morning warm up which gave him a much need boost and a great deal of confidence for the race to come. Being second on the grid gave Olly a great chance to get a good start and that he did along with two other riders and together they formed a breakaway group.
“I was sitting close behind the leader and watching the good lines and where I could pass. With a few laps to go I managed to get into the lead which was fantastic and I was leading for a few laps until unfortunately the race was red flagged, “
Said Olly
Luck was on Olly’s side; with only two laps to go until the end of the race it was declared that Olly was the winner. He was ecstatic with the win and also because he set the quickest lap time of the race.
“This win has given me great confidence to do well in the next round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to be held in Brno on August 16th and 17th.”
concluded Olly
