It has been an awesome start to the season for Olly Simpson, this weekend saw him back in Jerez, Spain for the first round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.
Olly begun the weekend with Fridays free practice, taking this opportunity to familiarise himself with the track again since the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup test held 3 weeks prior at the Jerez circuit. At this test he was able to get a good setup on the bike that he was still happy with. Olly got the 4th fastest time in the session. Following the session he had another free practice session and a qualifying session after that. Olly finished 3rd in the second free practice session and qualified 2nd on the grid.
Saturday begun with race 1, the 16 lap race at the Jerez circuit. Olly made a remarkable start from 2nd on the grid and took the lead straight away. He was at the front group in a constant battle for the top three. He stayed consistent and cool, attacking the whole race. He had a good fight for the top step on the podium on the last lap and managed to finish 3rd in race one. Olly was very happy with this as it was his first podium in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and he was looking forward to some more throughout the season.
Sunday followed with race 2. Olly was able to make another great start and once again hit the lead straight away. He quickly found himself in another heavy battle race for second position as the leader was able to get a gap on the first few laps. Olly made his way to second position and was trying to close the gap back to first but with a long straight it made it hard, still having to keep fighting with the other riders for second. Olly was in second for a majority of the race until the last lap. He was in the wrong position for the last corner, it was really close with 2 riders crashing out and Olly was able to take third position again. It was a great result for this weekend and Olly is in a good position for the championship sitting in second position in points.
The next round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup is in Assen, Holland. Olly is looking forward to this as he is really strong around this track and can challenge for more podium finishes.
