Last weekend Olly headed to Misano, Italy for the 7th round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. The weekend posed some challenges for Olly but he was resolute in taking the positives from the experience to apply to the future rounds.
Friday saw two free practices and one qualifying session all dampened by rain and classed as “wet”.
After crashes as Donnington BSB, the first session was all about building his confidence. Olly’s lap times continually improved and by the end of the session he was in 11th position. With slightly more grip for the next session, plenty of laps was still the order of the day to help improve Olly’s confidence which resulted in him posting the 6th fastest time. With plenty of laps under his belt, Olly felt confident going into the 20min qualifying session.
“I was feeling confident in the wet. Once again I built up to it and got quicker and quicker and a very fast lap on the last lap, which qualified me in 2nd place on the grid, which was very good”, said Olly.
Race day Saturday was dry. Olly made a good start but critical mistakes in the first few laps hurt his momentum which he has never really able to gain back finishing in 15th position.
Unhappy with the result, Olly took the positives from the round and looks forward to Aragon, Spain for the last round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.
