The Shannons Nationals at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit this weekend present Round 2 of the 2016 Series, with a stellar who’s who of Australian Motorsport in the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship 101, CAMS Australian GT Championship, the Australian Production Car Series and Radical Australia Cup featuring longer distance and Endurance events ranging from 50 minutes to 4 hours.
Those fans with a shorter attention span are well catered for with 3 Formula Three sprint races over the weekend. Racing for all tastes.
The 4 Hour Australian Production Car Series event is just a great way to finish off Saturdays program after the two shorter exciting 1 hour Australian GT Championship events, and a 12 Lap sprint race for The Australian Formula Three Premier Series as well as qualifying for Formula Three and Radical Australia Cup
The Production Car scene has seen a seismic change in makes and drivers for 2016 with BMW having 5 cars, Renault and Suzuki with 4 each and Audi, Toyota, Commodore and Mazda with 2 each, and a lone Falcon and none of the previously dominant Subaru WRXs and Mitsubishi EVOs. Also the driving talent has changed and a new guard is looking to challenge themselves as the Prod Car heroes, and knock the likes of Lynton, the Sherrins, Kostera and Alford off the podium.
Sunday will be SUPER SUNDAY headlined by the new CAMS Australian Endurance Championship Phillip Island 101 with 31 exotic cars, valued more than the economy of a small nation, including no less than 5 McLaren 650s, 6 Audi R8 Ultra/LMS, 4 new Mercedes GT SGT3 and 1 Mercedes SLS, 2 Ferrari 458 and 1 488, 2 Porsche 911 GT3Rs, 2 Aston Martins, 3 Lamborghini Gallardo and new to the Island Lamborghini Hurracan all racing for 101 Laps or around two and a half hours. An event not to be missed, with a driving line up of stars from almost every category including Van Gisbergen, Richards, Bowe, Baird, Denyer, Webb, Canto, the Quinn’s, the Miedeckes and more.
Sunday’s excitement is rounded out with a further two Australian Formula Three Premier Series races and 2 fantastic 50 minutes races for the Radical Australia Cup, the country’s most exciting prototype sports cars.
