It has been a comeback weekend for young South Australian Olly Simpson in the 6th round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Misano.
Simpson started the weekend with free practice 1. He got a good feeling and was able to make a few changes to the bike throughout the session. This allowed him to complete the session 15th fastest.
“I’m feeling really good on the bike and I’m looking forward to free practice 2”
Said Olly Simpson.
Simpson found a good rhythm in free practice 2, getting in a good group of riders which allowed him to get some quick laps under his belt early on. Olly was able to find another good setup change, finishing the session 8th fastest.
Olly felt confident going into qualifying. Unable to find a pack, he completed a majority of the race on his own. Despite not getting the lap he was after Simpson qualified in a respectable 11th position on the gird.
Saturday was race day, as this was Simpson’s only race for the weekend he needed to make a solid start. He was able to make a good start and made a very good first lap managing to get up to 5th as he crossed the line for the second lap.
Olly was still going forward, he pushed very hard but his pace wasn’t quick enough for the first group. Throughout the whole race he had a good battle and finished 6th in the race which was an incredible improvement.
“I feel like this is a big step forward”
Said Olly Simpson.
Simpson is now preparing from a strong finish for the last two races of the 2015 of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Aragon.
