Winton Woes For Barton

The first weekend of October saw the final round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Winton Motor Raceway. With all championships still to be decided, riders lined up to compete for championship Glory.

Amongst the Moto3 field, was 20 year old Matt Barton, aboard the Honda NSF.

“It sucks that we weren’t able to bring the Suus Honda FTR out this weekend but it’s still good to be out here competing at the ASBK. I’m riding the standard Honda NSF here that the Suus Honda team have prepared for me, but it’s nowhere near the spec that it was when we ran this bike in championship in 2014 and 2015. But I’m here to race with the pack and hone my skills ahead of my wildcard appearance at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island in 3 weeks’ time, and hopefully dice for a podium with these guys and girls this weekend.”

Said Matt.

Friday’s wet and windy conditions favoured Barton, as he topped the time sheets by over 2 seconds after the practice sessions.

“I’m surprised with how well I gelled back to the old chassis today and also how I adapted to the track. I’ve only rode here once since I moved into the moto3 category and that was over 3 years ago. I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend and looking to see how we go if the track drys up”

Said Matt.

Saturday proved to be a challenging day for Matt and the Suus Honda Team after drying and patchy conditions in the Qualifying sessions lead to small crash out of the Final turn. That meant Matt would start from 5th position for the weekends races.

“Qualifying was tricky the track was very patchy, but was drying up pretty quickly with the wind. We went out with our wet setup but by half way through the sessions some areas of the track were completely dry. I just pushed a little too hard on the front with the setup I had and the drying track and lost the front in turn 12 coming onto the main straight. It wasn’t a bad crash and there wasn’t much damage. So we’ll be back out there for the race this afternoon.”

Said Matt.

A dry track set the stage for the first of 3 races for the moto3 championship this weekend but Race ended early for Matt as he retired with a mechanical failure on the end of lap 5.

“Unfortunately the motor expired in the race today after I was beginning to make ground up on the pack in front battling for 3rd position. My start was good and probably could’ve pushed more in the first few corners and gained some positions. But I felt I needed a few laps to get my head around the track now it was dry and obviously a running faster. But every lap I was feeling better and felt there was quite a bit of potential for me to be fast around here.”

Said Matt.

Sadly the mechanical Failure ruled Matt out of the rest of the weekend’s proceedings as the engine damage was unrepairable.

“Unfortunately we have to withdraw from the rest of meeting after our engine failure. Friday looked really promising for us but as in any form of motorsport things can turn around very quickly. The Suus Honda team and I are now focused on our Wildcard in the moto3 World Championship at Phillip Island in 3 weeks and hope we can fight for a top 20 finish this year.”

Concluded Matt.
