Tom Sykes and Loris Baz in fine form at Jerez test

TomSykes Strip

Kawasaki Racing Team riders Tom Sykes and Loris Baz completed a three day test at Jerez in Spain with highly positive results.

In the last test for the 2013 world superbike champion, Tom spent his track time refining his set-up in preparation for a new season, which begins Phillip Island, February 21 -23. For Loris the Jerez tests allowed him to test new components and set- up and he once again showed good pace.

With good weather conditions in the southern Spain, both  Kawasaki riders finished with blistering lap times,  with Sykes setting a best of 1’39.6 and Baz 1’39.9.

Tom will adopt the number 1 plate for his Ninja ZX-10R in 2014, but as with all things Sykes, Tom has added a personal touch.   At times at Jerez, he ran a “prototype” of his new number 1 plate, with many small “66” graphics inside it.

Tom now returns to the UK to enjoy life with his wife Amy, and new baby girl Millie, before testing resumes late January at Almeria.

Tom Sykes:

We did a bit of everything at this test and it has been very good for us. I did a lot of laps again so my crew chief Marcel is working me well! We tested many different components, which you do not always get the chance to do in the middle of the season. Our testing schedule during the season was quite minimal compared to what we used to do, so this test has been a good experience overall. We retried certain things to understand if they are definitely better, especially over race distance, and I am happy with how it has gone. The Ninja ZX-10R is working well even though Jerez is not one of my strong points. That shows we have improved our package, which is the main thing.

The newly crowned world superbike champion has had another proud moment with the recent early arrival of his first daughter, Millie Grace.

Tom flew to Spain Wednesday November 13 for a two day test with Kawasaki, as his wife Amy was not due until November 21.

It was strange, but when I was on the plane something inside me was telling me to get off, and I almost did.

said Tom this week.

He made it to Jerez, but at 7am the next morning received a call from Amy to tell him she had gone into labour.

Without even mounting his bike, he hotfooted back to the airport, and headed back to the UK landing Thursday evening.

His new daughter, Millie, was born early the next morning, with Tom at his wife’s side.

It was an absolutely wonderful experience.  We married last year, I’ve just won the world championship and now we have our first daughter.  I know I’m biased, but she’s absolutely beautiful.   It’s a fantastic moment in my life.
